Star Wars engagement shoot

star, wars, engagement, shootThe other week I had the pleasure of completing a unusual request for an engagement shoot, Star Wars themed. Jay & Marc are having a Star Wars themed wedding, not full costumes at the wedding, just details and table plans paying homage to the great films. This styled shoot was reenacting homage to the more recent films, as Jay and Marc attend Cosplay events being massive Star Wars fans. I think they have come out really well and know that Jay & Marc love the shots and will be using them for their big day in June, cant wait.  star, wars, engagement, shootstar, wars, engagement, shoot

Italian Villa wedding photography | Sneak peek Emma & Seb

Italian,Villa, wedding, photography,Sneak, peekEmma & Seb’s Italian Villa wedding photography day yesterday and they both decided on going for this little moment which I think will prove really popular this year when possible, the “bride & groom first touch”. This can be a really emotional moment, and the emotion got the better of Seb here and Emma loved it. Seb trying to hold back the tears and Emma just loving the moment with everyone at the bridal prep house looking on. All that planning and this moment feels and brings the true reality to the critical moment before the main ceremony. The idea behind this photographically is that this raw emotion is much more present in the image when done like this than it is during the first look at the aisle of the ceremony, where the groom will do all he can most of the time to hold back emotionally as he is in front of everyone at the ceremony. This is only the second time I have done this shot and both times the emotion has been terrific for the image. I wont always prompt couples to opt for this shot, so if your a potential client of mine, feel free to ask me for it, as it can be done anywhere. I chose to crop out the hands in these shots as I wanted focus just on the expression of face, but sometimes you can make more of a feature of the hands in shot.

Bournemouth Dorset wedding photographer | Sneak peek Barry & Kym

Bournemouth, dorset, wedding, photographerA little wedding photographer sneaky peek of Barry and Kym’s big day in a Bournemouth church in Dorset last weekend. Their first look colour images are all edited and ready for them to view, but as they are still away on honeymoon I don’t expect to hear from them for a while about their further editing. I have done a bit of editing on these two images, black and white specialty above and a bit of high art below. The black and white shot was done with just natural lighting and a tiny bit of fill in flash bounced off a nearby wall, and the below image used one off camera light which just picked out the bride and groom and I under exposed the surroundings to highlight them both. When photographing inside a church as a wedding photographer, it is important to not just concentrate on head and shoulder shots, but also include the majestic nature of the surroundings, this is really important and so easily over looked. The patches of white on the floor in the below image is from the candles that sometimes are used inside the church, so big piles of wax.

Rhinefield House New Forest wedding photographer | 2016 Review

Rhinefield,House,New,Forest, wedding, photographerRhinefield House in the New Forest was a pleasure to be the wedding photographer at quite a few times during  2016, and of course it makes my review for last year. I love this first photography moment which I always tend to get at most weddings a close up of the bridal bouquet including the bride and groom at the signing of the register and loving life at this critical moment. This image is made that bit more special as I love the natural sunlight flaring through the large window which enhances that moment of the sun is shining and all is well with the world at this moment. A moment I hope they can look back on for years to come.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A PERFECT WEDDING DAY

Rhinefield,House,New,Forest, wedding, photographerI included this black and white photography shot as I love the over exposed natural light flowing through the door from the outside and hitting the groom’s face and the bride’s face being lit from the reflected light from the grooms face, a small but very crucial little tiny details I spot. Also another aspect of this shot that is unusual and unique is where I am photographing the location. This is the entrance to the Rhinefield House and it has a very awesome ceiling, which I never see other photographers taking advantage of as they get mesmerized by the scale and beauty of the rest of the venue and overlook the smaller niche details of this wedding venue. This is just a quick moment in the whole day while their guests vacate the ceremony room and make their way into the grounds and the happy couple relax for a few minutes drinking their Champagne.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A PERFECT WEDDING DAY

Rhinefield,House,New,Forest, wedding, photographerOften I have to explain to couples that the romantic couple shots only take around 10-15 minutes and these sort of shots above I can achieve with ease after nearly 20 years experience in the wedding photography field. This moment is created, but has the air of being spontaneous, and that is the most challenging aspect of natural wedding photography. My job as a wedding photographer is to enable people to relax in front of the camera, and that’s all about being a people person! Besides all that, I love this image, especially after my high art treatment of it with light pastel tints added, giving it a high key beauty and fits the delicate nature of the content….love.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A PERFECT WEDDING DAY

Rhinefield,House,New,Forest, wedding, photographerThis again is a semi posed shot, just guiding the couple where to stand and not fussing. Being critical of this shot, I would of preferred the bride’s hand being a bit straighter,  holding the flowers lower down, but thats just me, sometimes I fell the moment and don’t want to ruin it by interfering, other times the moment can be right for me to add a suggestion. I obviously have done allot of work on this image post editing for their high art versions and it has given a more timeless feel to the image.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A PERFECT WEDDING DAY

Rhinefield,House,New,Forest, wedding, photographerThis makes this blog post as it is so rare for me to see a smoke machine at a wedding, you cannot beat a bit of smoke to create an atmosphere, its very primordial! Put a few back lights in the mix, which are my off camera lighting and you have an absolutely awesome first dance image, while including some of the ambient lighting and also all the guests watching on…classic.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A PERFECT WEDDING DAY

Rhinefield,House,New,Forest, wedding, photographerNow this is a wedding image you wont see every day of the week, and most certainly hardly ever in Dorset, as this requires allot of tech patience to set up. I love night time or dusk photography, and I have created allot of truly amazing shots like these at Rhinefield as it makes such an amazing backdrop. I remember first starting wedding photography and really wanting to photograph a wedding there, and I had to wait years, but it was worth it. Of course since then weddings have moved on allot! Now I also look forward doing more shabby chic and rustic and festival weddings as they are the new and up and coming wedding trends.

Elmers Court New Forest wedding photographer | 2016 review

Elmers,Court,New,Forest, wedding, photographerElmers Court New Forest wedding photographer 2016 review today which was last summer, and I have a bit of a leaning towards black and white today. I have been really loving editing my clients photography into black and white this year with my new software which has the option for darkroom techniques that I used to use way back in the day of the physical darkroom in my garage. The new software enables me to choose different grade papers, filters and also tinker with the darks and lights, it just gives me full control over the black and white image, its just awesome. This year I have been loving the whole experience and have definitely rediscovered the beauty of this medium. The above photograph shows one aspect that I love about black and white is that I can bleach skin tones with filters, and this just makes the subjects look so glam.Elmers,Court,New,Forest, wedding, photographerThe warm dark tones in this above shot with the silhouette just oozes depth. This is what you can really push with black and white and we got lucky here with the sun peering round the cloud at the Elmers Court and giving that high dynamic range of tones from brilliant whites to dark shadow blacks. But we even have a little highlight on the bride’s face which just adds that bit more quality to this shot.   Elmers,Court,New,Forest, wedding, photographerHere I have again slightly bleached the skin tones to increase the depth of tones in the photograph and increase the contrast which also defines the features of the bride and groom. Black and white the majority of the time does need to be high in contrast, especially with wedding photography with the white dresses.  Elmers,Court,New,Forest, wedding, photographerAgain lots of contrast here and very little details in the grooms face as he is facing away from the light source but the bride is looking so glamorous while having her hand kissed by her new husband. Used a long zoom here to compress the background view of the Isle of White and boats to bring that more into the photography shot.  The whole shot is framed by the large Pine tree. Also note the composition of the bride and groom with the Brides eye just above the horizon in the background and the groom’s eyes on the horizon that focuses the viewers eye on the important aspect of the image, the kissing hand.  Elmers,Court,New,Forest, wedding, photographerSometimes called “noise” these days with digital camera, we used to call it “grain” in the days of film, and even though many years of film production manufacturers used to try and produce less and less grain us photographers really still occasionally loved to see a bit of grain as it adds character and warmth to an image. We have grain here while the skin bleaching effect is much more slight in this above shot. I love bridal preparation shots and they work great in black and white. I always love to be able to get the dress in shot with the bride getting ready.

The best fun wedding photos

funny, wedding, photo, dinosaurDinosaur chasing the wedding party had it’s time a few years back, it all seems very random to me, but if the clients ask me for it, I do it, its all part of the brief, and mine is not to reason why. Its all very Jurassic park fans, but definitely fits the funny wedding photography. So many fun wedding photo ideas.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A PERFECT WEDDING DAY
fun, wedding, photo, confettiThe confetti moment for the bride and groom is still the classic fun moment which sometimes these days gets replaced by the bubbles due to allot of wedding venues banning confetti. Those of you who have picked up my brochure will recognize this image, so if I am using it in my brochure, the confetti image is still king/queen in the fun wedding ideas department.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A PERFECT WEDDING DAY
funny, wedding, photo, camp, grooms, menI don’t get asked for this fun idea much, as mainly it requires the grooms men to do some acting, and other times I have been asked to do this, not all the guys/groomsmen are either good at acting or want to act camp, so if you want this shot, get those camp grooms men! I have placed it so high as this is the best online example I have seen, I know I am bias, but it is.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A PERFECT WEDDING DAY
funny, wedding, photo, bride, giant, shoes, ruby, slipperCant really choose between the next two shots for the very best fun wedding shot as I get the same amount of reaction to both images really but this Ruby giant bride’s shoe gets its share of comments and likes online. It is a shot again I have been asked to do now and again, thankfully not at the majority of weddings as it involves me laying on the ground most of the time!

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A PERFECT WEDDING DAY
funny, wedding, photo, bridezillaThis is by far the image that gets me the most attention. Once again this bride and groom asked me for quite a few fun shots throughout their wedding day and they were mostly pre planned as this one was. The bride originally asked me for the above Trex chasing the wedding party shot, but when she described herself as a Bridezilla, I then offered to place her int he shot instead of the Trex. I have been asked quite a few times over the past few years to do this shot again and again, so I know it chimes with some brides to be.

Fun wedding photo | My top 15

First 5. Fun composed wedding photo ideas are not most bride and groom’s cup of tea for their wedding photography, but some feel it fits their personalities, but all bride and groom’s want some fun depicted in at least some of their wedding photos, but more along the lines of those relaxed reportage moments that just happen, and there are few examples of those in here. It is my job as the wedding photographer to please my clients.

Starting at 15 and working our way to number 1 spot we have a spur of the moment where we had made our way to the Christchurch quay band stand to get a few shots after the Christchurch Priory ceremony and we found a band playing where we wanted to do the pictures, so the groom opted to ask to play the guitar for his bride, a great moment.

Knighton House Dorset wedding photographer | 2016 review

knighton, house, dorset, wedding, photography, bride, groom, relaxingIt was my pleasure to be the wedding photographer on this wedding day deep in the heart of Dorset. Knighton House in Dorset is one of the newest arrivals on the Dorset wedding photography venue scene. It is a school so it is only available during the school holidays, but as a public school it has very long holidays. The grounds are extensive and over looking lots and lots of Dorset countryside! These images on this blog are a small example of what can be achieved in and around Knighton school. The above image I only spotted after being at the venue for some time and had not noticed before due to this location only becoming an option for a stunning shot as the sun worked its way around to create the awesome warm back lighting. Even the normal natural colour shot I have shared before of Knighton House Dorset wedding photography needed no high art extra light editing, but when it came to the high art extra editing I was really spoiled for choice in the amount of post editing I could do as everything I chose just seemed to add another dimension to the image. This avenue of Yew trees could be utilized with off camera back lighting, but when the sun is out, why bother. Regarding the pose of Ben and Stacey I did give slight suggestions on how to stand etc, but as much as possible left them both to it to be as natural as possible. I made sure the dress was laying on the ground as neatly as possible and I like that there is a large tree root that the dress is lifted over so as to give a bit more shape. Stacey engaging the camera while Ben locking heads fully in love! The over hanging branches are one of the aspects that make this picture, as the leaves are beautifully back lit and wonderfully frame Ben and Stacey.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A STRESS FREE WEDDING DAY knighton, house, dorset, wedding, photography, bride, groom, relaxingAs with the first image this image is made magical by the back lighting again! No distracting details in the background just lots of light. This shot was taken in the Orchard at Knighton House and I had kicked a few ugly apples away from the foreground which looked a bit rotten, always important to eye up these small details, also helps save me any later air brushing. A classic pose here with bride and groom looking lovingly at each other, and I asked Stacey to lower her flowers so we can see the dress in a bit more detail, and also her arm and posture looks far more relaxed that it did in the first image.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A STRESS FREE WEDDING DAYknighton, house, dorset, wedding, photographyThis shot was taken just as bride and groom had arrived, but once again more back lighting. There are many opportunities at Knighton House for awesome images and on my next visit that is already booked in I will be taking full advantage. This hallway definitely has more possibilities with maybe more dramatic contrast of black and white.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A STRESS FREE WEDDING DAYknighton, house, dorset, wedding, photography, bride, groom, relaxingI mentioned off camera lighting earlier, and I couldn’t resist using them for this shot, just one light of to the right. This courtyard a minutes walk from the main house and has loads of character and once again lots of various opportunities for other shots. We ditched the flowers for this shot and this shots was far more of the natural kind and the smile on Stacey’s face was probably more due to me laying on the floor to get the low viewpoint I wanted to emphasize the  cobbles to draw the eye into them both. The exposure was set at least 3 stops below what the ambient light required as I wanted the off camera light to pick bride and groom out from the background, so as to render the background dark.

TOP TEN TIPS FOR A STRESS FREE WEDDING DAYdorset, wedding, photography, charlton, marshal,St,Mary, the,Virgin, first, kissThis shot isn’t from Knighton House but is in the little Dorset church where Stacey and Ben had their ceremony. You can have your ceremony at Knighton House, but this church was just around the corner of Stacey’s parents and so would of had sentimental reasons for using. Back lighting is the theme of this 2016 review as again light from outside the church with bride and groom kissing straight after the ceremony, always a big favorite for me.
